Animal Control Officer
Job Description -

Position: Animal Control Officer Hours: 2 people working 20 hours per week

(on call 32 hours per week)

Monday – Sunday 12:00PM – 9:00PM

General Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Locate, capture and arrange for quarantining or medical examination of animals that have bitten a human or other animal.

2. Apprehend injured, stray, or nuisance domestic animals within Beatrice city limits in the most safe, humane and approved manner possible. Administers emergency first aid. Transports animals to sheltering facility.

3. Operate tranquilizing equipment and traps.

4. Enforce Beatrice and Nebraska animal control laws, rules and regulations. Issue verbal and/or written warning and “fix-it” tickets.

5. Assist the Beatrice Police Department, Gage County Sheriff’s Department and Emergency Management Director when requested.

6. Provide private citizens with trap rentals for wild or nuisance animals (weather permitting)

7. Assist the Beatrice Animal Shelter kennel staff in cleaning and maintenance and the care of animals when necessary.

8. Inspects and cleans city vehicle and equipment daily and reports problems.

9. Provide public education (schools, clubs and the general public) regarding laws and license requirements, shelter and health requirements, and pet care and training.

10.Responds to calls dispatched by the Beatrice Police Department in priority order and determines appropriate action.

11. Appears for scheduled court dates and testified regarding civil infractions, custody hearings and cruelty charges. Coordinates efforts with other community professionals such as police officers, court officials and veterinarians.

12. Conducts general investigations of animal related problems such as barking dog complaints and possible cruelty situations. Prepares written investigative reports that may be introduced as legal court evidence.

13. Assists callers with information regarding situations such as nuisance or trapped animals and answers questions about animal control policies and laws.

14. Attends pertinent workshops and seminars; maintains certification as an Animal Control Officer.

15. Stays abreast of current animal welfare issues as well as the changing needs of the community.

16. Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

 • Experience in the animal welfare field to include: care of wild and domestic animals, knowledge of animal diseases, ability to determine breeds and species, sex and age. Ability to recognize signs of animal neglect, abuse and cruelty. 
 
 •
Knowledge of law enforcement techniques, principles and practices. Knowledge of local and state animal laws and court procedures.

 • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other community professionals.

 • Ability to occasionally lift 100 lbs.

 • High school degree

 • Must be willing to receive a series of rabies vaccinations

 • Must have a valid driver’s license
